ABSTRACT

Although soccer activities involve intermittent anaerobic bursts of activity throughout the match, ~90% of activities are aerobic in nature and the majority of energy needed to play soccer is produced via the aerobic pathways (Bangsbo et al., 1991; Balsom, 1999). There is a positive relationship between teams’ level of maximal aerobic power and both their success in soccer performance (Wisloff et al., 2001) as well as high placing in the league standing (Apor, 1988). Soccer played at a higher level of competitiveness tends towards a more aerobic nature compared to a lower level of play (Yamanaka et al., 1988) and differences in may also reflect the contrasting standard of play between teams (Nowacki et al., 1988; Ostojic, 2002). Thus the Beep test results of the present outfield players indicate that the local S-League is of a relatively lower standard of play as compared to other foreign leagues (Table 2).
