ABSTRACT
The first part of this contribution is an essay by two female anthropologists on the experiences gained during several months’ research in a traditionally oriented Sunni village in eastern Turkey. It tells of the sometimes painful crossing of personal and cultural frontiers by two European women on their way between maledominated worlds of women. In the joint essay, which was written in 1988, the authors come to the conclusion that it is particularly the irritations of the first experiences which one tends to ‘forget’, or to distort beyond recognition with the help of scientific theory. The essay serves as a means of presenting—instead of covering up—developments in the dialogue between the problems and issues of concern to feminism and to scientific work.
