ABSTRACT
This chapter aims to survey the theological developments over the period 1400–1750, which did so much to lay the foundations for the modern period in theology. In many ways, the period may be regarded as witnessing a series of developments which prepared the ground for modern theological methods, particularly in relation to three areas:
The dawn of a historical perspective.
The development of a critical approach to Scripture.
The shift in meaning of the word ‘Church’.
