ABSTRACT
A key element in retention strategies is an approach to assessment which does not leave students from disadvantaged groups facing a series of failed assignments to re-sit. One common consequence of success in recruiting students from disadvantaged groups on to social work courses has been a ‘tail’ of students taking longer to complete (some of whom end up withdrawing); this often contains disproportionate numbers of minority ethnic and disabled students.
