ABSTRACT

Student exchange programmes are well established, particularly in the European and US context and within specific international partnerships developed at the institutional level. The nature and uptake of these exchanges is diverse and variable, but the simple exchange of small numbers of students undertaking study of specific modules or units on cognate degrees in partner countries is the most common format. In social work, placements in a foreign country are often arranged and supervised from a university in partnership with a UK university (see box below). More recently, the trend has been towards bilateral exchange rather than exchange within a network of partners, which could include more than a dozen institutions with more than one in any one country.
