ABSTRACT

In a collection of essays, The Fruits of Merchant Capital: Slavery and Bourgeois Property in the Rise and Expansion of Capitalism, Eugene Genovese (in collaboration with Elizabeth Fox-Genovese) made the most recent summary and restatement of his basic interpretation of the Old South as a unique society and culture, that should be distinguished sharply from the capitalist, bourgeois society and culture of contemporary Britain or the US North. As explained in the Introduction, the authors' theory and methods are Marxist, though not all Marxists agree with their particular use of Marxian theory.
