ABSTRACT

The government has clearly indicated its support for not only maintaining, but indeed also expanding, the number and the diversity of faith schools. The Green Paper (DfES 2001), Schools: Building on Success, endorsed the wishes of the Church of England to open 100 new schools. The Green Paper indicated, too, the government’s wish to increase the number of state-funded religious schools generally

Several reasons are put forward for this. This chapter will review briefly some of those reasons in turn but argue that they do not address the important issues underlying faith schools. It is those issues which are the basis of increasing concern and opposition to current legislation.
