ABSTRACT

The primary aim of this chapter is to explore how we can investigate the impact of programmes of professional development in learning and teaching in higher education. Much of what I say about investigating the impact of programmes can also be adapted and applied to shorter, less formal staff development activities. I shall briefly outline various ideas about defining impact and about approaches and methods that could be used. I shall go on to consider the implications that choices of methods have for the understandings that we seek and claims that we can make about our professional development programmes and activities.
