ABSTRACT

Universities are heavily involved in both the initial and the continuing education and development of professionals, in fields as diverse as law, medicine, engineering, social work, nursing and of course, teaching. There is now a growing body of literature concerning this education and development of professionals within higher education (e.g. Barnett 1992; Boud et al. 1985; Eraut 1993, 1994; Morrison 1996; Yelloly and Henkel 1995). The idea for this chapter started with the thought that as staff and educational developers, we might usefully draw more on the existing literature of professional learning, education and development in our work with higher education teachers.
