ABSTRACT
One of my first jobs after graduation involved me in the validation and review of programmes of study in a university. I learned a great deal about what new entrants to fields as diverse as architecture and nursing had to know and be able to do in order to gain entry to their chosen profession. I was struck by the complex and subtle processes by which the requirements of initial professional education were agreed.
