ABSTRACT

More and more aspects of formal classroom training and e-learning have become merged into hybrid learning environments which contain a combination of face-to-face and Web-based formats (Benson, Johnson and Kuchinke, 2002), often referred to as ‘blended learning’ (Bastiaens, Martens and Stijnen, 2002). The electronic part of this blended learning is at the forefront of this book, making the term ‘integrated e-learning’ more appropriate. Evaluation plays an important role in identifying the issues involved in integrating e-learning in education and training. Evaluation is needed to improve the quality and effectiveness of the e-learning initiative and check the design assumptions. In other words, does the curriculum, course or task succeed in achieving the intended learning goals or the desired improvement of student competencies? Does the media mix work as intended? What are the organizational consequences?
