ABSTRACT
Much more is known about the first three centuries of the empire, usually called principate, than about the republic. The many literary sources of the time provide a great deal of information on this period as do the innumerable inscriptions that have survived. Because the sources are both extensive and varied we can obtain a reasonably reliable picture of the principate.
