ABSTRACT

Anyone who has only lately developed an interest in networked learning could be forgiven for assuming that this mode of learning is a recent development made possible by the creation of the World Wide Web. Recently, a team investigating this mode of learning in the UK defined networked learning as ‘learning in which information and communications technology (ICT) is used to promote connections: between one learner and other learners; between learners; and tutors; between a learning community and its resources’ (Networked Learning in Higher Education Project, 2000). If we accept this definition, then networked learning has a far longer history, albeit under other names.
