ABSTRACT

In many classrooms these expectations are implied rather than explicitly stated and this can lead to class management problems if the expectations are not understood by all. With some groups, such as those in tutorial sessions or following personal, social education programmes, it is worth while to develop a ‘bill of rights and responsibilities’ at the beginning of the sessions. The group can then agree, for example, that all will be given a hearing, sarcasm or put-downs will not be used and, although different views may not be accepted by all, the right of others to hold them will be respected.
