ABSTRACT

These views are entrenched in the culture although there are signs of change (see Chapter 3 by Jeff Wilson). The change could be accelerated by incorporating early in MDV courses, the experience of working with patients/clients and reflecting on these experiences. Collaborative learning provides opportunities for role modelling of communication and teamwork skills. If these skills are made explicit to the learners then they are likely to be enhanced. More specifically, collegiality and collaborative learning in seminars based on video recording of doctor patient/client consultations are more likely to build self-esteem, confidence and communicative competence than methods of teaching through humiliation (Pendleton et al, 1984). Attitudes and techniques of teamwork, mutual supportiveness and mastery of communication and the capacity to work well together are better modelled in a collegial atmosphere than in an authoritarian regime.
