ABSTRACT

Introduction A school leaver achieving high grades at A level has been the traditional student admitted into MDV education, but admission is influenced by the number of places on offer and the demand for those places. Demand has always exceeded supply (many times over), for medicine and veterinary courses, and most of the time for dentistry, although demand declined in the early 1980s in both Sweden (Sjostrom, 1995) and the United Kingdom (Duguid, 1989). In future, Medical Schools in Britain may find themselves competing for the pool of suitable candidates as the government aims to double the number of doctors by widening both access and diversity (see Chapter 14).
