ABSTRACT

From sustainable development to human sustainable development The rapid and increasing process of urbanization is leading to recognition of the increasingly vital role of the city. One half of the world’s population lives in cities, while the other half depends on cities for its survival. Population growth, globalization and democratization are the three factors which have contributed to strengthen the role of the cities as centres of production, consumption and change, whether it be political or social (Hall, 2003), thus helping to modify our vision of sustainable development.
