ABSTRACT

This chapter offers a new perspective on the issue of urban sustainability. Starting from a positive perspective on city life, it makes a typology of critical roles of the city which are to be considered with a view to urban sustainability. Next, it is argued that a sine qua non for a structured view on sustainable cities is the use of a more integrated perspective, as offered inter alia by cosmonomic philosophy. Then the chapter argues that the use and choice of indicators in multicriteria analysis for urban sustainability may usefully be based on this integrative methodology.
