ABSTRACT

This chapter focuses on project evaluation, physical planning and the usefulness of various evaluation methods such as Cost-Benefit Analysis (CBA) and Multicriteria Analysis (MCA) in the light of Sustainable Urban Development (SUD). The main objective of this chapter is to provide a systematic overview of the characteristics of SUD and various evaluation methods. We first begin this chapter with a discussion of the concept of Sustainable Urban Development and evaluation processes in the next section. The third section of this chapter describes the economic evaluation method CBA as well as its roots in welfare economic theory. However, the application of CBA in an SUD context is not without complications. This has led to the development of alternative methods to overcome the limitations of CBA. The fourth section is dedicated to these alternative evaluation methods often referred to as MCA. Finally, the examination concludes with a comparison of CBA with MCA methods.
