ABSTRACT
Small firms are extremely diverse. They range from small retail outlets such as fish and chip shops, newsagents, hairdressers and hi-fi shops, car repair workshops and a great variety of manufacturing firms, to hi-tech firms developing applications of new materials or biotechnology, designing complex instrumentation or writing complex software.
