ABSTRACT

The object of this paper is to describe and examine the privatization process conducted in Chile in the period 1974–89. The structure is as follows: the next section will deal with privatization in the 1970s, with a description of the initial position followed by the privatizing strategy observed at that time. The section after that will discuss privatization in the 1980s, its objectives, transfer procedures, and outcome. Lastly, major conclusions arising from the privatization experience in Chile will be drawn. A number of exhibits containing supplementary information are appended.
