ABSTRACT
South Africa is a country marked by extreme inequalities between the black and white population groups, the rich and the poor, and urban, peri-urban and rural communities. The state's policy of apartheid has been a source of social conflict and struggle for many years. We now find South Africa in a period of transition with the possibility of a negotiated settlement. The state has instituted a number of reforms, including reforms in the health sector.
