ABSTRACT

After more than ten years of Conservative government, there has been much analysis of the performance of the British economy over this period. See, for example, articles by Godley (1989); Layard and Nickell (1989), (1990); and Matthews and Stoney (1990). These tend to discuss a wide range of issues, such as unemployment, inflation, trade performance, income distribution and productivity. This chapter, however, focuses on one issue for which the government has claimed particular success, namely, productivity.
