ABSTRACT

This section is based on the outcomes of a research project jointly funded by the Department for Education and Employment (DfEE) and Sense (a voluntary organisation representing the interests of adults and children who are deafblind). The project team comprised Dr Jill Porter, Laura Pease and Olga Miller. The project focused on curriculum access for pupils who are deafblind and grew out of the follow-up to a three-year DfEE-funded national programme which aimed to improve provision for this group of pupils. Fifty-seven teachers and a total of 82 pupils took part in the project. Although the project finished in 1997, I have attempted to relate its findings to the current context by cross-referencing them to recent developments.
