ABSTRACT

Professional practice is not sacrosanct. Professions are challenged from within by the need to change practice in the light of scientific developments. They are challenged by other professions seeking to extend their own practice. An increasingly knowledgeable public now require a clearer account of what professionals do. Finally, the government and managers, working on their behalf, are holding professions to account more rigorously than ever before. This chapter explores the ethical consequences of these challenges.
