ABSTRACT

European elections provide an arena for national and European political parties to co-operate. The aim of this chapter is to consider how far they interact, how far this takes us towards truly transnational elections and what the implications are for electoral politics at the European level. Taking the 1994 election to the European Parliament (EP) as a case study, we look particularly at what it shows about: the evolution of European political integration; and the difference between political cultures in the European Union (EU) and nation states.
