ABSTRACT
The first two decades in the history of the Federal Republic were dominated by the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its Bavarian ally, the Christian Social Union (CSU). The Christian Democrats were similar to parallel groupings which appeared in other European countries but as a successful conservative biconfessional party they represented a new departure in Germany. Although the party was consciously biconfessional, its core membership was preponderantly Catholic.
