ABSTRACT

The tale of why a book was written is not always worth the telling; but in this case, it reveals so much about the book’s subject matter that I decided it was worth relating. It began almost by accident. In 1986, I was asked to put on a short course for teachers at the School of Education in Leicester where I then worked: the work was to have some form of multicultural dimension, but otherwise I had a free hand. I decided to link it to my main teaching commitment, which was with the Primary PGCE Science course, and decided to call the course ‘Multicultural Science in Primary Schools’, thereby hoping to attract both teachers and trainees onto the course.
