ABSTRACT

As a literature teacher, I welcome Louise Rosenblatt’s theory of reader response, particularly her emphasis on the importance of a rich, satisfying transaction between reader and text. I want my students to read a novel that is interesting, holds their attention, and builds on their individual backgrounds. I want them to read a novel not just because they are required to read it, but because it speaks to them personally and aesthetically. I want them to read a novel that offers an appropriate reading challenge: One that draws them in, enables them to identify with characters or situations, and inspires them to learn about and from these connections. I want them to read a text that will make them appreciate that particular book and want to read more because this experience was enjoyable, thought provoking, and gratifying. These components comprise a rich and satisfying transaction with a text.
