ABSTRACT

This chapter shows how the so-called ‘Islamic resurgence’ or ‘Islamic revival’ is deeply rooted in the history of Islam and is not the new phenomenon sometimes supposed. Moreover, it suggests that no single Islamic group or movement is the sole representative of this trend, which is rather made up of many different groups. Finally, it outlines the internal critique which currently characterizes Muslim society, and which questions from the inside some of Islam’s most fundamental premises.
