ABSTRACT

The professionalisation of coaching in organisations has developed considerably since first being translated into the workplace in America in the 1970s from its origins in sports coaching. As we have seen, coaching is no longer limited by the coach's expertise in the subject matter, but depends more on their ability to encourage the individual to access their own knowledge and experience to find their own solutions and ways of working that best suit them. This is more effective in providing long-term capability and confidence building than the original concept of the sports coach, where the coach offers solutions to the problem posed.
