ABSTRACT

This chapter explores some of the circumstances that can arise in coaching when it may be in the best interests of the coachee to refer them to another professional. The roles of the internal and external coach are considered in this context, as are the differences between coaching and therapeutic support as a response to the issues that can arise when coaching a client, and where additional professional support might be necessary and helpful. The chapter discusses the importance of professional supervision for the coach, and uses a case study to demonstrate how a diagnostic framework can help clarify the decision points where further help and support might be sought. Sources of further information and referral agencies are provided at the end of the chapter.
