The Social Significance of the Shaman among the Chinese Reindeer-Evenki

AROUND THE END of the 1820S, a small group of Evenki migrated with their reindeer into the mountain taiga of the Great Amur Bend in northeastern China. The area was rich in game at the time, and there was sufficient moss for the reindeer. Necessary bartering was done with the Cossacks of the border areas on the left banks of the Amur and the Argun rivers.
