ABSTRACT

Here my interest is in exploring the role that language has to play in the teaching and learning of art and design in schools. For this purpose I look in some detail at instances of language in use within the context of the complex meaning-making processes that play out in an art lesson. This raises issues about the place of language in the teaching and learning of the subject. There are, though, wider contexts and perspectives that underlie my particular approach to issues of language and its role in learning, and these frame my discussion.
