ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND: THE PROGRAMMES OF STUDY, NON-STATUTORY GUIDANCE AND ATTAINMENT TARGET 1
The programmes of study
There are sound educational reasons for teaching the nature of science, as well as legal and coercive reasons. Children are entitled to the National Curriculum; therefore, it is the duty of the science teacher to ensure that children have access to the PoS. When classrooms and departments are inspected it will be expected that the practice and schemes of work follow the PoS. The attainment targets (ATs) are solely the assessment ‘contract’. The PoS are the teaching ‘contract’.
