ABSTRACT

This chapter is a heavily edited extract from an influential study on staff relationships in primary schools. The work was based on case studies in five schools and a ‘culture of collaboration’ was identified in three of them. The key issue concerns the relationships between staff as people and the ways in which these influence their collective sense of purpose and commitment to fulfilling their roles in school. This work pre-dated the introduction of the national curriculum and research since then has identified a growth of collegiality in many schools, but with others becoming more hierarchically managed. How, for instance, would St Andrew’s Primary School, in Chapter 33, compare?
