ABSTRACT

This short vignette of a somewhat disruptive 5-year-old boy in class graphically illustrates the challenge of teaching young children. Wally has a vivid and fast-moving imagination which many other children seem to understand but which his teacher can only observe. His energy, motivation, and interest are tied to this imaginative world rather than to a teacherspecified curriculum and set of classroom procedures. He is thus difficult to manage in school.
