ABSTRACT

In a previous section, the issue of finding appropriate ways of responding to bullying and other unacceptable behaviour was discussed. Some of those suggestions were offered in the project, specifically having a hierarchy of sanctions and the ‘yellow and red card system’ reported by Imich and Jefferies (1989). One lunchtime supervisor (from school P1) reported on the outcome of the introduction of this system:

I think it has made a difference by stopping bullying and fighting and things like that. The boys seem to like it better than the girls, and I think that’s because it reminds them of football. I don’t suppose that matters too much since our girls don’t usually fight as much as the boys…. Now all the children know exactly what to expect if they misbehave.
