ABSTRACT
Conquest and settlement: upon these twin policies the French presence in Algeria was founded. Guarantors of French political, economic and social dominance, they underlie the discourse which will become the literary tradition of the pieds-noirs, generating both a praxis and a politique in that noun’s dual sense of politics and policy. The particularly intense nature of French involvement in Algeria renders representations of that experience especially interesting for the study of colonial literatures.
