ABSTRACT
The disputes in literary theory have been many and vicious. Across the last couple of decades some of the most conflicted, most invested disputes have concerned the relationship of politics to literature, and have focused on Shakespeare. They have split academic departments, ended friendships, established implacable enmities, produced interminable correspondence in letter columns, and just occasionally made headline news.
