ABSTRACT
In the popular mind both sport and leisure are essentially minor issues-‘optional extras’ which may enrich people’s lives, but matter less than earning a living or raising a family. Academics have by and large shared this view. There have been a few degree courses in Sports Science and Leisure Studies for over a decade now, but mainstream social science courses pay little attention to these topics in comparison with industry and the economy, or the welfare state.
