ABSTRACT
The most significant resistance to the process of deindustrialisation in Britain was marked by the strike action in 1984-85 by the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). As so often in the past, whether rightly or wrongly, the mineworkers had been in the forefront of action by the labour movement to precipitate or prevent change.
