ABSTRACT
A number of common themes emerge in the chapters of this book. The first, and most obvious, is the dramatic and rapid change that has been taking place in the British economy in the 1980s and 1990s. Contraction in traditional industries has probably been the most salient, and has perhaps had the most direct impact on individuals, communities, and, indeed, on the physical environment.
