ABSTRACT

Trade unions in Britain have changed their sense of membership in two ways in recent years. They have opened to women, as women themselves have pressed for equality and as male leaders have recognized women as an undeniably significant source of future membership strength. The unions have also begun to prepare for a role in the social dialogue of the European Union. This chapter is based on research which asks whether women are being enabled to use their skills in the new cross-national activities of the unions in Europe and to develop working contacts with their counterparts in other EU member states.
