ABSTRACT
It is a striking fact that, despite the centralization of poor relief and medical care in the hospitals of the early modern period, and the emergence of the hospital as the dominant medical institution in the nineteenth century, the system of parish relief has not only continued to exist but has also experienced repeated revivals. It does indeed have an important role again nowadays. This is essentially due to its success in fulfilling certain tasks in the care of the sick and poor.
