ABSTRACT
This study represents part of a broader concern with the relationships between Japanese towns and their past. It is also an opportunity to clarify the relationships between the forms and modes of urban life on the one hand and religious worship on the other. We have chosen a shrine (jinja) linked to the Shintō religion in an endeavour to understand what a parish could signify in the Japanese urban context.
