ABSTRACT

The Neolithic in Heilongjiang shares several characteristics with that of Jilin. In both regions archaeologists needed to distinguish true Neolithic sites from Bronze Age sites without bronze before progress could be made. Neolithic sites are thinly spread (as far as is now known) in both provinces. Both have pottery with incised and impressed geometric markings. Sites in Heilongjiang are found in the same kinds of locations as in Jilin. It is clear that the two provinces make a continuous region, so that it is artificial to divide the archaeology according to these administrative units.
