Poor relief and health care in Scotland, 1575–1710

This chapter is of necessity based on very slight material. Little was done in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries for the sick poor because little or nothing was done for any of the poor in most parts of Scotland, despite the existence of statutes establishing a poor law in the 1570s. It is the failure of social legislation which is the theme of this chapter.
