ABSTRACT

This chapter outlines two important tools that have considerable potential in accelerating the growth, spread, and efficiency of microtrade, namely e-commerce and public procurement of goods produced by LPP producers in LDCs. Microtrade is a novel concept, conceived with the primary focus of effective poverty alleviation from LDCs. For this goal to materialize it is imperative to innovatively deploy both traditional and non-traditional means of promoting microtrade the world over. Two significant requirements underlying the success of microtrade are cost-efficiency and sustained demand for LPPs. The e-commerce model for microtrade, based on the efficient deployment of ICT is directed at achieving a high degree of cost efficiency by creating an easily accessible and operable system of online commerce for microtrade. The proposal for developing a “socially responsible public procurement” of microtrade goods is primarily aimed at ensuring a substantial and lasting demand for microtraded products.
