ABSTRACT

Anunciacion, La Antonia Eiriz’s painting La anunciacion (The Annunciation) is one of finest examples of Cuban expressionism. Created in 1963-4, this free inter pretation of the Biblical theme synthesizes the artist’s existential concerns about the human condition, terror and death. In the painting, the Archangel Gabriel is represented as a grotesque and aggressive figure, while the Virgin Mary appears as a humble seamstress. The work not only symbolizes the violence and horror of the human drama, it also becomes an exploration of the splits and divisions appearing at the time of its creation. It belongs to the collection of Havana’s National Museum of Fine Art.
